Vintage Story Server Commands (and the Creative Mode Command)

The server commands owners use most, checked against the game wiki: /op, /gamemode creative and /gm, kick and ban, teleport, time and weather, /serverconfig, saving and /stats. Plus .chb, the in-game command handbook.

Vintage Story server commands all start with /. You can type them in the Console tab of your dashboard, or in the in-game chat once you are an admin. This page lists the commands server owners use most, checked against the game's own wiki. In the examples, replace PlayerName with a real player name, and do not type square brackets.

The wiki's own command list carries a warning that it is not fully checked against every update. When a command does not behave as written, type .chb in the game's chat to open the in-game command handbook, which the wiki calls "generally up to date with the current game version".

Becoming an admin

CommandWhat it does
/op PlayerNameMakes a player an admin. Same as /player PlayerName role admin.
/player PlayerName role suplayerSets a player back to the default survival player role.
/list roleLists the roles the server has.

Run /op on yourself from the Console tab first. The admin role has every privilege, including making other players admins.

Creative mode

The creative mode command is /gamemode creative, or its shorthand /gm creative.

CommandWhat it does
/gamemode creativeSwitches you to creative: every block in the creative inventory, instant block breaking, flying, and you cannot die.
/gamemode survivalSwitches you back to survival.
/gamemode spectatorFly and look around without touching anything.
/gamemode PlayerName creativeSets another player's game mode.
/gm 2Shorthand with a number: 0 guest, 1 survival, 2 creative, 3 spectator.

The wiki notes that mode names can be shortened, so /gm c works too.

Changing game mode needs the gamemode privilege, which admins have. If /gamemode creative is refused even for an admin, check AllowCreativeMode under WorldConfig in data/serverconfig.json. The wiki describes it as the old "Allow cheats" switch, which "forbids the use of /gamemode creative even if you are an admin" when it is off. The default is true.

Managing players

CommandWhat it does
/list clientsShows who is connected.
/kick PlayerName reasonKicks a player.
/ban PlayerName reasonBans a player.
/unban PlayerNameLifts a ban.
/list bannedShows the ban list.
/player PlayerName whitelist onAdds a player to the whitelist.
/announce messageSends a message to every chat group on the server.

Teleporting

CommandWhat it does
/tp PlayerNameTeleports you to a player.
/tp PlayerName x y zTeleports a player to a position.
/tp x y zTeleports you to the coordinates shown in the game's coordinate box.
/tp ~10 ~0 ~0Moves you relative to where you stand, here 10 blocks along x.

Time and weather

CommandWhat it does
/time set daySets the clock to midday. morning, sunset, night and midnight work too, or a number of hours such as /time set 8.
/time speed 60Shows or sets the game time speed. 60 is the default.
/weather stoprainEnds the current rain by skipping to a time without rain.
/nexttempstormDays left until the next temporal storm.

The wiki carries a warning about time commands: changing time often "has unwanted side effects", and it recommends testing them in a separate world or taking a backup first. Take one on the Backups tab before you experiment.

Server settings from the console

CommandWhat it does
/serverconfig password yourpasswordRequires a password to join. No spaces.
/serverconfig nopasswordRemoves the password.
/serverconfig WhitelistMode onOnly whitelisted players can join. off lets anyone in.
/serverconfig allowpvp falseStops players hurting each other.
/serverconfig allowfirespread falseStops fire spreading.
/serverconfig maxchunkradius 10Caps players' view distance, in chunks.
/serverconfig setspawnhereMakes where you stand the default spawn point.
/serverconfig passtimewhenempty falseStops game time passing while nobody is online.

More on each one, and the matching lines in serverconfig.json, is in Server settings.

Saving, backups and status

CommandWhat it does
/autosavenowSaves the world now.
/genbackupCopies the current save into the game's backups folder, without pausing the server.
/statsShows tick rate, memory use and other server statistics.
/info seedShows the world's seed.
/info createdversionShows the game version the world was created in.
/stopStops the server. Use the dashboard's power buttons to start it again.

/genbackup writes its copy into the game's backups folder on the server itself. A backup from the Backups tab is the one you can restore from the dashboard with one click.
