Valheim 1.0 Updates & Mods on Your Server

How game updates reach your server automatically, how to hold a version while console players catch up, what 1.0 does to an existing world, and where mods stand.

Valheim 1.0 landed on 9 September 2026, and it will keep getting patches. Here's how updates reach your server, how to stay in step with your players, and where mods stand.

Updates are automatic

With Auto Update on (the default), your server checks Steam and installs any new build every time it starts. So the moment a patch ships:

  1. Restart the server from the Overview tab (or wait for the scheduled daily restart).
  2. Watch the console — the update downloads first, then the world loads.
  3. Share the new join code with console players.

Players update through Steam or their console store. Until both sides match, joins fail with a version error — see Players Can't Join.

Holding a version

Consoles sometimes receive a patch later than Steam. If your group is mixed and you'd rather not split them, set Auto Update to 0 before the next restart. Turn it back on when everyone has the new version.

1.0 and your existing world

Worlds made before 1.0 keep working. The Deep North generates in parts of the map nobody has explored yet — if your group has already sailed the far north, that area stays as it was.

Mods: what to expect

Your server runs the official, unmodified dedicated server, and that's deliberate. Iron Gate has said they can't guarantee that mods survive the 1.0 update, and a mod that fails to load stops the whole server from starting.

There is no Steam Workshop for Valheim. Mods are installed by hand with a loader such as BepInEx, and you have full Files and SFTP access if you want to try:

  • Take a backup first — always.
  • Expect breakage right after any game patch, and be ready to remove the loader to get the server booting again.
  • Most mods also need to be installed on every player's game, and console players can't install mods at all — a modded server is effectively PC-only.

We don't provide support for mod setup or mod problems, but if a modded server won't start, a ticket with the last lines of your console is still welcome — we'll help you get back to a booting server.

Reinstalling the server

If the game files are ever damaged, the Server Settings tab has a Reinstall action. It redownloads the server from Steam and leaves the saves/ folder alone, so your world survives. Take a backup before you use it regardless.
